Tres Rios Fly Fishing & Adventure
2012-13 Season Gallery
Teresa and I are very grateful to all our guests/friends that fished with us to make 2012-13 season the busiest ever in our 14-year history. Many anglers were back for the second, third, and even forth time. We are aware that there are many other fly fishing options in Chile and elsewhere, and we are deeply appreciative and honored to have so many return visits.
All Lakes Region waters opened, as always, on the second Friday of November, this year the 13th. Howard and Marion, from the UK, joined us at Tres Rios Lodge for the first week of the season in an unusually warm and dry spring. Area rivers were in optimum conditions, running low and clear.
I never count fish but Howard, a man of numbers in the world of finance, kept a tally for his fly fishing journal. Although it was not surprising to me, it was reassuring that he averaged 21.37174 fish per day, far and away his best fishing ever for wild trout in terms of numbers and size. While Marion did not keep a record, her experience matched that of her husband. As a kicker we hooked and landed a few fresh Chinook Salmon on every trip down the Petrohue River.
In November and December we had a succession of day trips with guests staying at our Tradicion Austral Bed & Breakfast in Puerto Varas. Fly fishing for trout and salmon continued to be excellent using the classic Petrohue technique of stripping streamers in the pockets along the banks to move chunky and aggressive browns. Eric hooked a couple monsters, and Karen, a total novice, netted her first ever trout on a fly.
Heavy rains on December 24th filled the Petrohue to overflowing, spilling into parking areas at the launch site, the highest level that I ever fished, more than six feet over November levels. Nonetheless, Edgar and I took a family out for the day, finding trout and salmon in the flowing back channels that were non-navigable trickles a month earlier.
In the second week of December the October rains commenced and rivers began a steady climb. Fishing remained excellent as the rivers did not color. As water levels rise the trout do likewise, always seeking out those pockets where they can eat, prey, live for the greatest gain at the least expense. Brothers Dylan and Dan had trophy browns during this high water period and King Salmon as well.
Yes, that's Coach Knight, Bryan Warga, and Captain of the USA Fly Fishing Team, Anthony Naranja, along with present and future guides. They had some outstanding fishing in early January but Anthony took most photos with his pro cameras. We look forward to posting copies when they come along.
The wild bunch came for a good time in Patagonia and it turned out to be a very memorable week.
It was great to have Mike and Chas "Don Francisco" back with us for the third time.
Rich and Donna escape the Colorado winter at the end of January. It has been our pleasure to take them fly fishing on Road Trips from Coyhaique to Chaiten and all over the Tres Rios Lodge fisheries. We will be seeing them back for the third season in a row in February 2014.
Dave's here...it must be the second week of February, as he hasn't missed a round in years.
Gerry was with us for 2.5 days of fly fishing last season (check the photos) and came back this season for 2 weeks, his wife joining him for a few days to see what it was all about. Something tells me he will be back again for more of Patagonia Chile fly fishing.
Teddy and Jack came from Poland for a two-weeks fly fishing safari starting at Tres Rios Lodge and ending 600 km further south in Patagonia at Coyhaique in Aysen. Besides the Petrohue and Maullin rivers, on the Road Trip we floated or waded rivers of renown such as the Yelcho, Futaleufu, Palena, Quinto, Pico, Rosselot, Figueroa, Manihuales, Nirehuao, and Simpson.
Rick and Carl came for 2 weeks this season, their forth trip to fish with us in Patagonia Chile. We spent a week fly fishing from Tres Rios Lodge, including a day of helicopter fishing. We also spent a week around fly fishing the Manihuales area in late season an had some outstanding days in terms of quantity and quality. They are coming back in 2014 for 2 weeks on different fisheries and new experiences.
